Trezor CTO Highlights the Importance of Randomness in Hardware Wallets

Tomas Susanka, CTO of Trezor, emphasized the critical importance of randomness when generating recovery seeds following the theft of at least 594 bitcoins due to a vulnerability in Coldcard wallets. He warned that weak initial entropy renders the security measures of a hardware wallet useless for protecting private keys. Susanka explained that predictable entropy exposes funds to being drained remotely, allowing attackers to recreate private keys without physical contact. To mitigate this risk, he stressed the importance of not relying on a single source for generating randomness. Trezor mixes the entropy from the device's microcontroller with that of the host machine and has incorporated multiple additional sources to ensure a solid 128-bit entropy. Furthermore, he questioned the effectiveness of air-gapped devices, arguing that the lack of connection does not guarantee greater security if the number generation is weak.
