Tim Cook Steps Down: Bitcoin, AI, What the New Apple CEO Must Urgently Address
A tweet, a comma, and fifteen years come to a close this Monday, August 31, 2026, as Tim Cook bids farewell to Apple. On X, he writes that his title is changing but his affection remains intact. Emotion is nice, but this Tuesday, September 1, history continues without pause with John Ternus officially becoming Apple’s eighth CEO. Urgent questions are already awaiting him, particularly regarding bitcoin and AI.
In Brief
- Tim Cook stepped down as CEO this Monday with a very personal farewell message on X, before becoming executive chairman.
- John Ternus inherits a tight schedule: iPhone keynote on September 9, Siri under Gemini, OpenAI lawsuit, and rising memory costs.
- Unlike Cook, who personally owns bitcoin, Ternus has never taken a position on the subject.
Who is John Ternus, the New Head of Apple?
At 50 years old, John Ternus is not an unfamiliar face that fell from the sky. He joined Apple in 2001 as part of the Product Design team and climbed the ranks to become senior vice president in charge of hardware engineering in 2021. He even oversaw the Apple Watch, AirPods, and Vision Pro. Where Tim Cook was primarily a manager turned global diplomat, Ternus has a reputation as a decisive executor obsessed with the product. Tim Cook himself described him as brilliant, wonderful, and capable.
Keynote, AI, SIRI, The Hot Topics Awaiting John Ternus
There is currently a pile of files on Apple’s desks, and John Ternus doesn’t have time to get acquainted with the chair. Only eight days separate Ternus’s taking office from Apple’s next keynote, scheduled for September 9, 2026. At this annual event, he will present:
- The new generation of iPhones;
- Probably the very first foldable iPhone model.
But the most explosive file is AI. Apple has chosen to build its next-generation Siri on Google’s Gemini technology. Ternus will therefore need to transform this admission of technological weakness into a convincing product. This is necessary to prevent Apple from permanently losing the race for consumer AI. Additionally, there is the legal dispute where Apple accuses OpenAI of stealing trade secrets. Financially, the current surge in memory chip prices directly threatens Apple’s margins.
What Position Will John Ternus Take on Bitcoin?
In fifteen years at the helm of Apple, Tim Cook has never hidden the fact that he personally owns Bitcoin for about three years now. However, he has always kept his personal treasure separate from Apple’s balance sheet because, for him, people do not buy Apple stock to expose themselves to crypto.
Unlike Cook, John Ternus has never made any public statements or taken a position. Bitcoin enthusiasts are certainly hoping for a change in doctrine. This is just a hypothesis, but in a world where stablecoins and crypto payments are slowly encroaching on the territory of tech giants, Ternus’s silence may not last.
September 9, 2026, will provide a first glimpse of John Ternus at the helm of Apple. Between decisions on AI, managing the OpenAI lawsuit, and possibly a first public statement on bitcoin... the schedule is packed. Just a few days left to see if the new CEO of Apple plans to simply manage Tim Cook's legacy or truly carve his own path.
