Retatrutida, an experimental drug for obesity, is generating unprecedented frenzy. Expectations are rising due to its promises of extreme weight loss and potential longevity benefits.

In April, pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly received a request for early access to the drug through the FDA's compassionate use program. The applicant was a 79-year-old man with powerful connections, rumored to be President Donald Trump.

The Trump administration denied these claims, calling them "sick and demented" in a post on X. Nevertheless, the incident put retatrutida in the global spotlight.

What makes retatrutida different?

Like Ozempic, retatrutida is a GLP-1 agonist, but it goes further: it is the first triple agonist. It acts on GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon receptors.

Glucagon stimulates metabolism and helps the liver release energy reserves. It also increases fat oxidation, explains Phuong Vo, chief physician at the Medici clinic.

According to a report from Elle magazine, phase 3 trials show weight loss of up to 30%, compared to 15-20% for other drugs. Previously, only bariatric surgery achieved such results.

Dr. David Shafer, a plastic surgeon in New York, describes the addition of glucagon as "the trifecta." He is participating in a clinical trial with retatrutida.

Shafer claims he personally sees a slight difference, but not a surprising factor compared to other GLP-1s. Nevertheless, the scientific community and longevity seekers are excited.

The promise of longevity

Beyond weight loss, many believe retatrutida could curb inflammation and improve metabolic health. Dr. Vo admits that the exact mechanism of this anti-inflammatory effect is still unknown.

"We have seen in the data that even without a significant reduction in blood sugar, there seemed to be some kind of anti-inflammatory effect," says Vo. This has led some to microdose the drug to treat autoimmunity.

Influencer Braden Peters, known as Clavicular, calls retatrutida "the supreme good" and uses it in his routine. Andrew Huberman has labeled it "a billion-dollar drug" and claims that all celebrities are seeking that look.

On the social network Reddit, the subreddit r/retatrutida receives 194,000 weekly visitors. Users exchange stories about how to obtain the drug and their progress, warning each other to speak in code.

The drug is purchased on the gray market, through WhatsApp and Discord, and attempts are even made to import it in bulk from China. The FDA issued a warning in June against these practices.

Risks and side effects

The side effects of retatrutida are a cause for concern. A May study in the European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found that 20% of patients report dysesthesia: strange sensations in the skin.

Vo explains that rapid weight loss can affect the fat pads around the nerves, causing these symptoms. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation, similar to other GLP-1s, are also reported.

Shafer warns that the drug should be taken under medical supervision. "All these yahoos are ordering things online and injecting themselves. That's where people are going to have problems," he says.

Dr. Alexander GolBerg, a physician in New York, points out that the body is a complex system and does not like abrupt changes. Therefore, he recommends starting with the most studied and available drugs.

Vo warns about excessive hope: "We had a lot of hope in metformin at the time, but it didn't change mortality in long-term studies." Retatrutide could be bigger, but it is still too early.

The Race to Obtain It

Demand is so high that compounding pharmacies are trying to manufacture it, although the FDA banned that practice in June. Telehealth companies have also been warned for marketing it.

The only safe way to access the drug is to participate in a clinical trial. Shafer emphasizes that it should not be seen as a vitamin or supplement, but as a serious medical intervention.

Despite the warnings, the community continues to buy it on the black market. Fans refer to it in code and avoid talking to the media, but the flow continues.

The situation recalls the frenzy of cryptocurrencies in their early days, where hype and speculation outpaced regulation. Retatrutide has enormous potential, but also serious risks.

Experts insist that safety must be the priority. The drug is still in phase 3 and more research is needed before its approval.

When Will It Be Available?

Retatrutide is still in phase 3 trials. Once they conclude, it will be formally submitted to the FDA, a process that typically takes 10 to 12 months.

If all goes well, it could be available to the public in 2027 or 2028. Until then, anyone taking it is obtaining it from clinical trials or the black market, with the risks that entails.

Shafer, who is already taking it, would not prescribe it immediately to his patients. "There is no reason to go straight to reta," he says, recommending starting with the most studied drugs.

GolBerg agrees that the body reacts differently to each drug. "The body does not like sudden changes; everything is interrelated," he states.

Retatrutide could be the next big breakthrough in metabolic and longevity medicine. But until it goes through the necessary approval channels, caution is essential.

The current hype, driven by celebrities and the promise of a longer life, must be balanced with scientific evidence. Only time and rigorous trials will determine whether this drug is truly the "super soldier serum" or a fleeting illusion.
