An exchange-traded fund that pays its investors by selling pieces of a plummeting asset: this is what is happening with the 21Shares Polkadot ETF, which in the recently closed quarter recorded $4.52 in losses for every dollar distributed to shareholders in the form of staking rewards. The losses of the Polkadot ETF are not a marginal accounting detail: they illustrate how costly it has become for a regulated fund to offer exposure to a token that continues to lose value quarter after quarter.

      • What competitive changes affected the Polkadot ETF market in 2026?

    Key points

    • 21Shares Polkadot ETF (TDOT) recorded $4.52 in losses for every dollar of staking payout distributed in the quarter.
    • The fund sold 98,505 DOT to generate $107,510 in cash payments, finalizing losses of $485,553.
    • DOT fell by 34% in the second quarter of 2026 and by 76% in the 12 months ending June 30, 2026.
    • Total realized losses for the quarter, including redemptions and sponsor fees, reached $2.5 million.
    • The total value locked in Polkadot parachains remains below $100 million, while Grayscale withdrew its registration for its Polkadot ETF on August 7.

21Shares Polkadot ETF Records Significant Losses from Staking Payouts

The mechanism behind the loss is simple but ruthless: TDOT shareholders do not receive staking rewards in DOT, but only in dollars, after the fund has sold portions of the token to generate liquidity. In the quarter, the sale of 98,505 DOT produced $107,510 in cash payments to shareholders, but those sales finalized $485,553 in losses, a direct consequence of the underlying asset's price collapse.

The fund's document does not hide the dynamics: aggregate distributions have reduced the trust's holdings in DOT precisely through the sale of the token to generate cash. In other words, every euro distributed to investors has cost the fund more than four times that in realized losses, a ratio that makes the payout more of a warning sign than a benefit for those holding shares.

    Comparison with Competing Staking Funds

The data takes on even more weight when compared to that of rival funds. Among the four crypto staking funds that reported realized losses in the second quarter, none lost more than $0.89 for every dollar distributed. The Galaxy Solana fund from Invesco recorded a loss of $0.89, the Solana fund from the same sponsor $0.74, the one on Sui $0.31, while the staked ether fund from BlackRock stopped at $0.25. TDOT, with its $4.52, stands out sharply from the rest of the sector.

Drastic Drop in DOT Price and Low Liquidity of Parachains

Behind the fund's figures lies a drop in DOT price that leaves no room for those betting on the Polkadot network. In the second quarter of 2026, the token fell by 34%, dropping from $1.25 on March 31 to $0.82 on June 30. Over the twelve months ending June 30, 2026, the decline rises to 76%, and DOT is currently trading about 97% below its all-time high.

The two distributions for the quarter reflect this decline: the first, at $0.090846 per share, with a record date of May 14; the second, at $0.056134 per share, with a record date of June 29. A payout in contraction on an asset equally in contraction. Overall, those who held TDOT between April and June earned just $0.146980 per share, a figure far from compensating for the drop in share price from $14.95 to $9.86.

The Value Locked in Parachains Remains Below $100 Million

The Polkadot project promised parallel execution capable of handling up to a million transactions per second across a hundred parachains, a true "internet of blockchains" with shared security and cross-chain interoperability. In reality, the total value locked in Polkadot parachains remains below $100 million, a tiny fraction of initial expectations. Investors seem to have found utility elsewhere, which is directly reflected in the demand for the token and, consequently, the losses of the Polkadot ETF.

Fund Ownership, Redemptions, and Fees Aggravating Losses

Selling DOT to pay staking rewards was not even the most expensive liquidation of the quarter. Redemptions requested by investors wanting to exit the fund forced the trust to realize another $1.76 million in losses. Additionally, $253,417 was lost from selling DOT and paying the sponsor's fee. Adding it all up, the total realized losses for the quarter reach $2.5 million.

Who is Behind the TDOT Fund

The fund's sponsor is 21Shares US LLC, fully controlled by 21co Holdings Limited. The prime crypto broker FalconX completed the acquisition of the parent company in November 2025. The quarterly report bears the signatures of CEO Russell Barlow and President Duncan Moir, dated August 14. The original backer of the trust was the Web 3.0 Technologies Foundation, the Swiss entity behind Polkadot, which funded the fund in January 2025 with DOT worth approximately $53 million, equivalent to about $88 per share: a number that today seems far from the $9.86 closing price of the second quarter.

Grayscale's Withdrawal and the Future of Altcoin ETFs

Grayscale withdrew its registration for its Polkadot ETF on August 7, along with those for funds on Cardano and Hedera, submitting the three Form RW requests in just over three minutes without any shares ever having been issued, sold, or distributed under those registrations. No official reason was provided beyond a generic reference that the company no longer intends to proceed with the planned distributions.

    What Changes for the Altcoin ETF Market {#What_Changes_for_the_Altcoin_ETF_Market}

In short, competition is thinning rather than growing. The net asset value of crypto ETF funds has been in a general decline since the beginning of 2025, and Grayscale's withdrawal comes just as TDOT shows how fragile the distribution model based on token sales to generate dollar payouts can be. For investors still exposed to Polkadot through a regulated vehicle, the message is clear: earning staking returns does not compensate for an asset that continues to lose ground in the market.
