The fusion sector has seen a significant uptick in recent years. TechCrunch cites data from FusionX indicating that several fusion startups have secured over $100 million in committed funding from private investors. Factors driving this surge include stronger computing chips, more mature AI tools, and advancements in high-temperature superconducting magnets.
In late 2022, the U.S. Department of Energy's laboratory announced the achievement of a controlled fusion reaction, producing more energy than the energy injected into the fuel target by lasers. This result is seen as a crossing of the "scientific break-even point," although there is still a distance to commercial power plants, it has strengthened the market's judgment on the feasibility of the underlying technology.
CFS and Helion Lead in Funding
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is currently one of the largest companies in terms of funding. The company completed a $1.8 billion Series B funding round in 2021 and is constructing the Sparc reactor in Massachusetts, aiming to achieve scientific break-even by 2027. The company also plans to initiate the construction of a commercial power plant, Arc, later in this decade, designed to have a generation capacity of 400 megawatts. Google has agreed to purchase half of the power generated.
Helion's commercialization timeline is even more aggressive. The company plans to generate power through its reactor by 2028, with Microsoft as its first customer. FusionX data shows that Helion has cumulatively secured about $3.2 billion in committed funding. The company's most recent funding round occurred in June this year, amounting to $465 million, with a valuation reaching $15.5 billion.
TAE and Pacific Fusion Pursue Different Paths
Founded in 1998, TAE Technologies adopts a field-reversed configuration approach. The company announced in December 2025 that it would merge with Trump Media Technology Group. This all-stock transaction values the merged company at $6 billion. According to disclosures, TAE will receive $200 million and an additional $100 million after filing documents with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Pacific Fusion entered the market with over $1 billion in Series A funding. The company employs an inertial confinement fusion approach but does not use laser compression for fuel; instead, it relies on collaborative electromagnetic pulses. Its funding is structured in phases, with investors continuing to fund as the company reaches established milestones, a setup more akin to practices common in the biotechnology industry.
European Companies and Cautious Commercialization Paths
Proxima Fusion represents European fusion startups. FusionX data shows that the company has raised over $682.9 million, with its most recent funding round announced in July this year, valuing it at $2.7 billion. The company bets on the stellarator approach, planning to complete a net energy demonstration device, Alpha, in the early 2030s and advance the commercial power plant, Stellaris, later in the same decade.
Shine Technologies takes a more cautious path. As fusion power generation still requires a long time, the company is currently selling neutron testing and medical isotopes and developing radioactive waste recycling solutions. PitchBook data indicates that Shine has raised approximately $1 billion in total funding.
Overall, the fusion industry remains in a high-investment, long-cycle phase, but the capital market no longer views it as merely a distant concept. With accelerated advancements in AI modeling, simulation capabilities, and key hardware, more companies are attempting to translate laboratory results into the construction of commercial power plants.
