OpenAI Unleashes $1 Billion Against AI-Enhanced Cyberattacks
AI must not become a weapon. OpenAI will subsidize access to Daybreak, its suite of cybersecurity tools, for the next six months. The package also includes training, technical support, and partnerships. The announcement comes just days after the unveiling of Astra, a model capable of discovering unknown vulnerabilities and constructing functional attacks. Crypto companies are not explicitly listed among the priority beneficiaries, but open-source software developers can apply.
Key Points {#h-key-points}
- OpenAI is subsidizing access to Daybreak, its cybersecurity suite, with up to $1 billion after acknowledging that Astra independently finds new vulnerabilities and develops associated exploits.
- No DeFi protocol, blockchain, or wallet provider is among the targeted beneficiaries, even though the on-chain code is public, immutable, and backed by billions.
- Chainalysis reported over $2 billion stolen in just the first half of 2025, including $1.46 billion from the Bybit hack.
- The weak point remains off-chain: interfaces, developer workstations, and multisig signing screens, exactly the scope that Daybreak claims to cover.
OpenAI: One Billion Dollars to Strengthen Cyber Defense {#h-openai-one-billion-dollars-to-strengthen-cyber-defense}
Contrary to what the amount might suggest, OpenAI is not creating a fund that directly distributes cash grants. Its Daybreak for Frontline Defenders program represents $1 billion in discounted or free access, training, technical support, and partnerships. OpenAI expects this funding to be utilized over the next six months.
Daybreak comes in two tiers. The Blue version uses the company's standard models to analyze code, identify suspicious activities, and prepare patches. The Red version grants certain approved organizations access to specialized models for more sensitive cybersecurity operations.
According to OpenAI, around 2,000 organizations and workspaces are already using these tools. Priority beneficiaries include drinking water networks, electric operators, local governments, regional banks, associations, and open-source project leaders with limited resources.
This initiative responds to the rapid advancement of AI offensive capabilities. The Astra model notably found two previously unknown vulnerabilities during internal testing. It also managed to escape from a browser placed in a secure environment and combine multiple vulnerabilities to gain administrator privileges on a system.
OpenAI has classified these capabilities at the "critical" level of its internal risk preparedness framework. Some phases of Astra's development have been delayed to add protections, and its most advanced functions are initially reserved for selected testers.
Crypto is not mentioned, but it may be knocking at the door {#h-crypto-is-not-mentioned-but-it-may-be-knocking-at-the-door}
Exchanges, wallet providers, and DeFi protocols are never named in the announcement. However, it would be excessive to claim they are excluded from the program. OpenAI clearly states that open-source software maintainers can apply for access to Daybreak.
Bitcoin Core, Ethereum clients like Geth or Reth, and many libraries used by decentralized finance potentially fall into this category. Their code is public and can be examined by both researchers and attackers equipped with AI models.
This situation is already worrying the industry. In August, over thirty crypto companies and organizations, including Coinbase, Block, BitGo, Blockstream, and ARK Invest, urged AI labs to give independent researchers early access to their most powerful models.
The signatories believed that the filters applied to public tools could prevent defenders from searching for certain vulnerabilities, while attackers have access to open models, diverted access, or specialized software. They specifically called for more computing power, secure environments, and a direct channel with lab teams.
Daybreak partially addresses these requests. It can be used to examine legacy code, confirm a vulnerability, assess risks, and test a patch. For open-source crypto projects, the challenge will now be to determine which will be accepted and at what level of access. More than ever, AI has become a double-edged sword.
