Altcoin Season Index 2026: Is Altcoin Season Starting? Latest Data and Market Analysis

By: WEEX|2026/07/22 11:15:00

TL;DR

  • The Altcoin Season Index tracks how many top cryptocurrencies outperform Bitcoin over a 90-day period, with 75 commonly used as an altcoin season threshold.
  • Current 2026 readings vary across platforms, but major trackers have not reached levels that confirm a broad altcoin season.
  • Bitcoin dominance remains relatively strong, suggesting capital rotation into altcoins has not yet become a market-wide trend.
  • Differences between index providers come from variations in coin selection, calculation methods, and update timing.
  • A sustained altcoin season would likely require stronger altcoin performance, lower Bitcoin dominance, and confirmation from broader market indicators.

Scroll through crypto X or Reddit long enough and you'll run into some version of the same claim: "altcoins are about to take off," "capital is rotating out of Bitcoin." But open up two or three different Altcoin Season Index trackers on the same day, and you'll notice something odd — they don't agree with each other. One platform might show a reading in the high 50s. Another, checked at the same time, shows something in the mid-30s.

This piece breaks down what the Altcoin Season Index actually measures, why the numbers diverge so much between sources, and — using the most recent data available — why 2026 still doesn't look like a genuine altcoin season, at least not yet.

What Is the Altcoin Season Index?

The Altcoin Season Index was popularized by Blockchaincenter, and the underlying idea is fairly simple. The index tracks the top cryptocurrencies by market capitalization and checks how many of them have outperformed Bitcoin over a trailing 90-day window. That percentage gets converted into a score from 0 to 100.

The general thresholds used across most trackers are:

75 or above — considered a confirmed "altcoin season," meaning the large majority of top altcoins have beaten Bitcoin's return over the past 90 days

25 or below — considered "Bitcoin season," meaning capital is concentrated in BTC and altcoins are broadly underperforming

Between 25 and 75 — a mixed or transitional market, without a clear rotation in either direction

It's a useful shorthand, but the number is only as good as the methodology behind it — and that's exactly where things start to get messy.

Is It Altcoin Season Right Now? Current Market Data Analysis

As of mid-to-late July 2026, different trackers are reporting meaningfully different scores for the same underlying market:

CoinStats puts the 24-hour and 7-day reading at 45, with the 1-month average closer to 35. The platform's data shows a yearly high of 65 on July 5, 2026, and a yearly low of just 14 back on December 19, 2025.

CoinGlass, per reporting from Yahoo Finance / BeInCrypto, had climbed to 58 as of mid-July, building on a spike to 64 recorded on June 4. That's described as a signal that some capital may be starting to rotate out of Bitcoin, though not decisively.

Blockchaincenter's own index, as cited in a BeInCrypto/Yahoo Finance report from earlier in 2026, has at times read as low as 35, sitting firmly inside "Bitcoin season" territory even while long-term altcoin charts were flashing setups that visually resembled the 2017 and 2021 cycles.

A 20-plus point spread between trackers, on what's supposed to be a single well-defined metric, is worth pausing on. The question isn't which platform is "wrong" — it's why the numbers don't line up in the first place.

Why Altcoin Season Index Scores Differ Across Platforms

A few structural reasons explain most of the divergence:

Sample size differences. Some trackers measure the top 50 coins by market cap, others measure the top 100. The wider the sample, the more small-cap outliers can pull the score in either direction.

Window and calculation timing. Most trackers describe using a 90-day rolling window, but the exact start/end points, update cadence, and whether stablecoins are excluded from the sample all vary by provider.

Update frequency. Some platforms update once daily after market close; others update closer to real time. During choppy weeks, that alone can produce a materially different snapshot depending on when you check.

None of this means any single tracker is fabricating data — it means the "ruler" each one uses is slightly different, which is exactly why relying on just one source to call an altcoin season is risky.

Bitcoin Dominance and Altcoin Season: Why BTC Still Leads the Market

Regardless of which altcoin index you look at, there's broad agreement on one point: Bitcoin's dominance over total crypto market capitalization has not meaningfully cracked. As of late July 2026,  BTC dominance sits around 56-57%, a level that's held up through most of the year with only modest pullbacks.

An earlier BeInCrypto/Yahoo Finance analysis noted that dominance had fallen from roughly 58.1% to around 54% in early July before settling back near 56%, while the combined market share of altcoins outside Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins expanded from about 19.4% to nearly 24.7% over the same stretch. That's a real but modest shift — not the kind of wholesale rotation that defined past altcoin seasons.

This matters because individual altcoins can and do post huge single-day moves without the broader market rotating. Recent examples include a token tied to the Robinhood Chain ecosystem briefly hitting a new all-time high with a daily gain of over 70%, or a governance token rebounding nearly 15% intraday after an unrelated sell-off. These are narrative-driven, isolated moves — closer to how the market behaved through much of 2026's "selective" bounce pattern, where specific catalysts (a listing, an ecosystem announcement, a chain partnership) move individual tokens without lifting the broader altcoin basket.

That's structurally different from 2017 or 2021, when a genuine altcoin season meant broad-based appreciation — during the February-to-May 2021 run, for example, large-cap altcoins as a group returned around 174% versus Bitcoin's roughly 2%, according to data referenced by CoinMarketCap. Nothing in the current data resembles that kind of across-the-board move.

What Signals Could Confirm the Next Altcoin Season?

Several market commentators have laid out fairly consistent conditions for a "confirmed" altcoin season rather than a temporary bounce. A recurring framework, discussed in StealthEX's altcoin season guide, suggests that a sustained rotation would likely require Bitcoin dominance to fall meaningfully below the 50-55% range and the Altcoin Season Index to climb above and hold at 75.

As of now, neither condition has been met simultaneously. Bitcoin dominance remains in the high-50s, and even the most bullish tracker reading (CoinGlass's 58) is still well short of the 75 confirmation threshold. Analysts following the ETH/BTC and SOL/BTC pairs — often used as secondary confirmation signals — have also noted that without clear strength in those pairs, an index reading above 50 may simply reflect short-term rotation rather than a durable trend change.

Altcoin Season 2026: Frequently Asked Questions

What Altcoin Season Index score counts as an "altcoin season"?
Most trackers use 75 as the confirmation threshold. A reading of 25 or below is generally classified as "Bitcoin season," and anything in between is considered a mixed or transitional market.

Is it altcoin season right now, in 2026?
Based on the most recent readings across major trackers (roughly 35-58 depending on the source), the market sits in a mixed zone. None of the widely used indices have reached the 75-point confirmation level, and Bitcoin dominance remains in the 56-60% range.

How often is the Altcoin Season Index updated?
Most platforms update daily, though exact calculation timing and the underlying coin sample vary — which is part of why different sites can show different scores on the same day.

Why do different websites show different Altcoin Season Index numbers?
The main causes are differences in sample size (top 50 vs. top 100 coins), variations in how the 90-day window is calculated, and whether stablecoins are excluded. It's a methodology gap, not a data integrity issue.

What would it take for a real altcoin season to start?
Most analysts point to two conditions needing to align: Bitcoin dominance breaking meaningfully below the 50-55% range, and the Altcoin Season Index climbing above and holding at 75, ideally confirmed by strength in the ETH/BTC and SOL/BTC pairs.

Will Altcoin Season Start in 2026?

Depending on which tracker you check, today's Altcoin Season Index reads anywhere from the mid-30s to the high-50s — a spread wide enough that the number alone isn't a reliable signal on its own. What the data does agree on is that Bitcoin dominance remains firmly above 55%, individual altcoin rallies are largely narrative-driven rather than broad-based, and neither of the two conditions analysts typically cite for a confirmed altcoin season has been met. Until that changes, 2026's "altcoin season" remains a story traders are telling more than one the data is currently backing up.
