$1,000 Invested 15 Years Ago: Bitcoin Outperforms Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, and Gold
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone else planted a tree a long time ago. A thousand dollars, fifteen years apart, six trajectories that have nothing in common anymore. If invested in Bitcoin in September 2011, when the crypto was worth $8.33, that thousand dollars would today be worth approximately $9.6 million, based on a Bitcoin price of $79,735 on September 8, 2026. The same amount invested in gold, long considered the ultimate safe haven asset against Bitcoin, would have only returned $2,328 over the same period. In between, four other assets tell each a different story of the last decade and a half of markets.
Bitcoin Blows the Meter, Traditional Tech Lags Behind
According to historical price series from Macrotrends, Nvidia's stock, adjusted for its multiple splits, was worth about $0.33 at the beginning of September 2011. Closing at $230.36 on Friday, September 4, 2026, it shows a multiplier of about 698 times, which would have turned $1,000 into $698,000. An impressive figure. Except that Bitcoin performs nearly fourteen times better over the same period, with an annualized compound return nearing 84% per year compared to about 55% for Nvidia.
Tesla, valued at about $1.85 in adjusted data at the beginning of September 2011, closes at $354.09 on September 4, 2026, a multiplier close to 191 that would have turned the same amount into about $191,000. Apple, on the other hand, was worth about $11.40 in adjusted data at the same time and closes at $319.97 on September 4, 2026, a factor of about 28 that brings the investment to about $28,000. Nothing to be ashamed of, though: 28 times its value in fifteen years remains a result that most traditional investments can only envy.
Gold and the S&P 500 Remind Us of a Truth
Gold, precisely, stands out for its wisdom. Priced at $1,892.65 per ounce on September 4, 2011, amid a post-crisis frenzy of American debt that would push the yellow metal to its historical record of over $1,900 on September 5 before a drop to about $1,620 by the end of September, gold is trading at $4,406 on September 8, 2026, according to USAGold, a modest multiplier of 2.33. A thousand dollars would have become $2,328, the weakest performance in the ranking. Gold remains true to its reputation as a safe haven, one that protects without ever inspiring dreams.
The S&P 500 occupies an intermediate position. Established at 1,173.88 points at the beginning of September 2011 according to monthly series from Multpl, the American index closes at 7,718.60 points on September 4, 2026, a multiplier of 6.58. An investment of $1,000 would today be worth about $6,577, excluding dividends. With reinvested dividends, the multiple would be significantly higher. An honorable result for an index that reflects the American economy as a whole rather than a bet on a handful of companies.
This comparison is not a recommendation in reverse, and the past never predicts the future. The Bitcoin of 2011 had neither infrastructure, nor regulation, nor the $62.5 billion in assets that BlackRock holds, as of September 4, 2026, in its only spot ETF. Yet this same Bitcoin is increasingly establishing itself as a fully-fledged diversification asset, far from the marginal speculative object it was at the turn of the 2010s. Fifteen years apart, six assets, one lesson that transcends the numbers: time remains the most underestimated lever in finance.

Oracle and Adobe in Focus This Week |WEEX TradFi Daily (September 8, 2026)
Markets are entering a new pricing window after the U.S. holiday close, with attention shifting squarely to this week’s catalysts. Stronger August payrolls revived expectations for a more restrictive Fed path and pushed yields higher, weighing on long-duration equities. In crypto, bitcoin eased below $80,000, but continued spot ETF inflows suggest institutional demand remains supportive at lower levels. At the same time, AI meme tokens materially outperformed the broader market, showing that speculative capital is still concentrating in high-beta thematic trades. Investors are now watching GME earnings, Oracle and Adobe results, and the upcoming PPI and CPI prints for the next repricing signal.
