US Companies Begin $100 Billion Tariff Refunds, Limited Consumer Reimbursements
US companies have started receiving tariff refunds amounting to $100 billion, but consumer reimbursements vary by company. Customers who directly paid the tariffs may receive partial refunds, but costs included in retail prices are unlikely to lead to cash refunds. The US government has disbursed $100 billion by the end of July, which is more than half of the $166 billion that companies are owed. Consumers will not receive direct refunds and will have to rely on companies to voluntarily issue refunds or lower prices. FedEx has initiated a refund process worth $800 million, while UPS has applied for $500 million in refunds. Amazon received $600 million in refunds for the second quarter and plans to track cases where certain costs were passed on to customers for reimbursement. Walmart and Costco plan to use the refund amounts to enhance price competitiveness. Senator Elizabeth Warren has demanded that large retailers disclose the amount of refunds and their plans for consumer returns, pointing out that consumers have received nothing. This issue highlights the conflict between corporate accounting and consumer rights, which may also affect Korean consumers.
