UK FCA Report Highlights Cross-Border Payments as Key Use Case for Stablecoins

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has released a policy report titled "Stablecoin Sprint," which indicates that cross-border payments are the most clear and immediate application scenario for stablecoins, while the adoption in the domestic retail sector in the UK is expected to be relatively slow. Participating institutions noted that stablecoins have significant advantages in emerging markets where access to US dollars is restricted, but their benefits are limited in existing major channels with fast and inexpensive payment systems. UK consumers lack the incentive to switch, as current payment methods are already sufficiently quick and cheap, while merchants can benefit from lower costs and faster settlements. This feedback has been incorporated into the final rules published by the FCA on June 30, which require that stablecoins issued in the UK must be fully backed by reserve assets and redeemable at face value.
