Sony and TSMC Invest $6.4 Billion in Sensor Factory in Japan
Sony Group and TSMC are in talks for a joint investment of 1 trillion yen (approximately $6.4 billion) to build an image sensor manufacturing plant in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. Mass production is planned to start in 2029. The controlling stake will belong to Sony Semiconductor Solutions, while the Japanese government is considering providing financial support for the project. The joint venture will focus on producing sensors for artificial intelligence robots and autonomous vehicles. This agreement will help Sony maintain its leadership in the image sensor market and redistribute resources towards intellectual property. Sony is already a leading supplier of sensors for Apple, Huawei, and Samsung, and is actively expanding its presence in the automotive sector and robotics. For TSMC, this partnership will ensure stable capacity utilization and strengthen the company's position in Japan.
