Solana Reduces Slot Time to 350 Milliseconds, Aims for 200 Milliseconds
Solana Shortens Slot Time for the First Time Since Network Launch
On August 22, 2026 (Saturday), Solana upgraded its mainnet, reducing the target slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds. This marks the first time the slot time has been shortened since the network was established.
This change is the first phase of a plan to ultimately reduce the slot time to 200 milliseconds, aimed at decreasing delays associated with transaction processing.
Shortened to 350 Milliseconds Based on SIMD-0525
A slot refers to the time frame allocated for a designated validator to generate a block of transactions on the Solana blockchain.
The recent 50-millisecond reduction is based on the upgrade proposal "SIMD-0525," which was approved and integrated on May 14. This proposal outlines a roadmap to reduce the previously set target slot time of 400 milliseconds in four stages, each by 50 milliseconds, ultimately reaching 200 milliseconds.
Jacob Creech, Vice President of Technology at the Solana Foundation, stated in a post on X, "We have entered a new era with 350 milliseconds. The next target is 300 milliseconds." As of the time of writing, the average slot time on Solana's slot time explorer is 360 milliseconds, which is below the previous target of 400 milliseconds.
The reduction in slot time is expected to decrease the waiting time for users to confirm transactions. The duration of one epoch, consisting of 432,000 slots, will be shortened from approximately 48 hours to about 42 hours. Additionally, the interval for validators to switch between generating four consecutive blocks will decrease from the previous 1.6 seconds to 1.4 seconds.
Next Target is 300 Milliseconds, Ultimately 200 Milliseconds
While the reduction in slot time improves network latency, it does not increase the total workload that Solana can process per second. Instead of validators processing slots more frequently, the amount processed in each slot will decrease.
Solana developers plan to gradually reduce the slot time to 300 milliseconds, 250 milliseconds, and finally 200 milliseconds, in increments of 50 milliseconds. Each stage will be activated individually, moving to the next phase after confirming network performance at 350 milliseconds.
Currently, there is no set date for the transition to 300 milliseconds. Additionally, a mechanism is in place to pause the rollout if the number of validators unable to generate blocks within the allocated slots increases.
All four phases of changes aim for activation on the mainnet with the validator client "Agave v4.2" developed by Anza, but the future schedule remains tentative.
