Solana has reduced its block generation time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, marking the first such change since the protocol's launch. The plan aims to further decrease this time to 200 milliseconds. The implementation of improvements in the SIMD-0525 proposal, accepted by validators, has enabled this new achievement. The average block generation time currently stands at around 355 milliseconds. The new validator client Agave version v4.2, developed by the Anza team, is crucial for these changes. The plan includes four phases of reducing block generation time by 50 milliseconds each. Shortening latency times is expected to accelerate transaction confirmations, which is vital for decentralized finance and on-chain gaming. Analysts point to challenges related to node synchronization and the need for high-quality internet connections and hardware. So far, tests have shown that validators are coping well with the new timing regime. The development of Solana's infrastructure competes with layer two solutions on Ethereum, aiming to maintain an edge in throughput.
