Polymarket has appointed Travis VanderZanden as chief growth officer, announced by CEO Shayne Coplan. VanderZanden is the founder of Bird and a former executive at Lyft and Uber. He has a background in 'blitzscaling,' a strategy focusing on rapid growth through significant venture capital investment. Polymarket and its competitor Kalshi experienced similar growth in the early stages of the prediction market expansion, but Kalshi has recently outpaced Polymarket, particularly in sports betting markets. In July, Polymarket and Polymarket US reported a combined volume of 12.9 billion dollars, while Kalshi reached 40 billion dollars. The number of active Polymarket traders has remained stable amid increasing competition from established crypto exchanges and apps like DraftKings and Robinhood. Both companies have raised substantial funds, with Polymarket reportedly seeking a valuation over 20 billion dollars and Kalshi aiming for 40 billion dollars. Regulatory scrutiny is increasing, with the New York City Council investigating prediction market platforms for targeting younger audiences and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission advocating for federally-regulated platforms.
