NERC Updates Connection Rules for Distributed Generation to Power Grids

The National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities (NERC) is preparing to update the Distribution and Transmission System Codes to stimulate maneuverable generation. The innovations will allow storage operators to install their own power plants, share capacity for intake and output, and enable multiple electricity producers to use a single cable. Flexible connections will allow new generating facilities and energy storage installations to connect to the grid with limited line capacity, provided that customers adhere to certain technical operating parameters. This will shorten the launch times for new energy projects without waiting for the completion of major repairs or the construction of additional power transmission lines. The Commission is also working on implementing other provisions of the law, including the division of permitted capacity into supply and withdrawal of electricity, granting rights to energy storage facility operators to install their own generating capacities, and expanding the list of customers for the cable pooling joint connection mechanism.
