NATO Prevented a Secret Russian Operation to Disable Internet Cables in the Arctic
This spring, NATO allies intercepted Russian submarines that were training to use secret technology to disable underwater cables. The covert operation was conducted by the Russian Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research (GUГИ) using deep-sea devices. The operation by the UK, Norway, and the US detected Russian vessels in Arctic waters and prevented them from completing their training. The training of the Russians focused on simulating actions in the event of a conflict with NATO. Western intelligence fears that Russia is preparing to test Article 5 on mutual defense, where the destruction of fiber-optic cables is a key part of sabotage. These cables provide global Internet and financial operations, including transmitting satellite data for NASA's network. CIA Director John Ratcliffe visited Moscow to prevent the escalation of sabotage activities. London and Oslo provided the Kremlin with evidence of awareness of the new technology. Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik stated that any attempts to attack infrastructure will be detected and punished. NATO is deploying additional forces in the Far North in response to the growing threat. Experts note an increase in suspicious Russian and Chinese vessels near underwater pipelines, which is seen as preparation for sabotage. European countries and NATO are enhancing patrols with new monitoring systems.
