Mayors Reject Land Law and Warn About Foreign Ownership
The Argentine Federation of Municipalities (FAM), which brings together more than 500 mayors, rejected the bill on the Inviolability of Private Property and urged national senators to protect Argentine territory and sovereignty. In a statement titled "The Homeland is not for sale. The land is not either," FAM, led by Fernando Espinoza, questioned the initiative of President Javier Milei's government, warning that it could increase foreign ownership of national territory. The organization requested senators to reject the bill that modifies the land protection regime, raising the limit of rural land in foreign hands from 15% to 25%. FAM argued that the project dismantles strategic tools for the defense of national sovereignty and criticized the easing of restrictions in border areas and regions with strategic resources. Furthermore, it warned about the risk of large areas of the country falling under the control of foreign interests, especially in regions with lithium, copper, and oil reserves. It compared the Argentine regime with restrictions in other countries in the region and Europe, highlighting that while the world protects its strategic resources, this project seeks to eliminate protective measures. The organization recalled that the judiciary suspended the Executive's attempt to repeal the Land Law through DNU 70/2023 and stated that preserving territorial heritage is a permanent obligation of the Argentine State.
