Kalshi Research Report Claims World Cup-Related Trading Volume Exceeds $27 Billion
The prediction market platform Kalshi has released a research report titled "Hedging Sports Risk: A World Cup Case Study," which points out that prediction markets are becoming a new tool for businesses to manage sports financial risks, potentially lowering the costs of traditional hedging. Using the 2026 World Cup as a case study, the report states that the commercial scale related to this World Cup has reached a historic high, with Fox and Telemundo paying approximately $1 billion for broadcasting rights and corporate advertising spending around $10.5 billion. The economic impact of the three host countries is expected to reach $40.9 billion, and the cumulative trading volume in Kalshi's World Cup-related markets has surpassed $27 billion. The report shows that Kalshi's World Cup-related markets cover over 33,000 event contracts, with sample data indicating that the market prediction accuracy reached 85.7% the day before the matches, with a probability calibration error of only 1.96%. As the global sports economy is projected to grow from the current approximately $23 trillion to $88 trillion by 2050, prediction markets may become a new type of risk pricing infrastructure connecting sports business, insurance, and financial markets. Kalshi states that traditional sports risks typically rely on customized insurance products for management, which have limited coverage and high costs, while prediction markets can provide risk hedging tools for brand sponsors, advertisers, and organizers.
