India's 10-year government bond yield reached 6.8709%, marking the highest level since June 15. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept the benchmark interest rate unchanged but mentioned the possibility of tightening due to inflation risks in the meeting minutes. The RBI maintained the policy rate at 5.25% during the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting from August 3 to 5, with the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate at 5.00% and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate at 5.50%. Following the release of the minutes, the market focused more on the potential for tightening rather than the rate freeze. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das warned that rising food and fuel prices could exert inflationary pressures. Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta noted that there is little room for further easing, suggesting that there could be a case for rate hikes. The bond market reacted to the tightening signals, leading to an increase in the 10-year yield. Rising oil prices also added pressure to the Indian bond market, with Brent crude trading at $92 per barrel on August 20. This issue is acting more as a macro variable rather than having a direct impact on the crypto market. The next MPC meeting is scheduled for October 5-7.
