George Santos Reaches $35,000 Settlement with CFTC

By: rootdata|2026/07/31 22:59:54

Former U.S. Congressman George Santos has reached a settlement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The CFTC noted that Santos engaged in manipulative trading behavior while trading prediction contracts on Kalshi regarding whether he would attend the State of the Union address in February 2026, profiting over $17,500. According to the CFTC announcement, Santos is required to pay $35,000 as part of the settlement but did not admit or deny the findings of the investigation. The CFTC stated that in the two weeks leading up to the State of the Union address, Santos made multiple public comments about whether he would attend, causing significant fluctuations in the contract prices. While holding a "Yes" position indicating he would attend, he posted on the X platform asking about his attire, leading to a price increase in the Yes position within hours, after which Santos closed his position for profit. The CFTC also claimed that Santos profited from trading based on market reactions to his statements about his travel plans to Washington, D.C., considering his actions to be intentional or reckless. Santos's attorney stated that the State of the Union contract was Santos's first involvement in prediction market betting.
