Former OpenAI Researcher Joins Conduit to Develop Non-Invasive Brain-Computer Interface
Former OpenAI alignment researcher Naomi Bashkansky has joined the brain-computer interface company Conduit as a founding researcher after leaving her previous position. Conduit is developing a non-invasive "mind-reading AI" that reads brain signals through a headset and translates thoughts into text. The company has collected approximately 10,000 hours of brain signal and language data, with participants wearing the device to converse with or type to the AI, allowing the model to learn the correlation between brain signals and language. Currently, the technology cannot read minds word-for-word but can only guess the general meaning; for example, if a user thinks, "It seems like the room is getting colder," the model might interpret it as, "There is a slight breeze." Bashkansky compares this technology to the GPT-2 stage and believes that in the coming years, humans may be able to control AI directly with their thoughts.
