Fixed-term deposits in dollars: earnings and considerations before investing
Savvy savers often hold dollars that yield no returns. One option is a fixed-term deposit in dollars, which generates interest over a specified period. The rates are generally lower than those in pesos, making it important to compare what each bank offers and the final amount at maturity. Liquidity is key, as the money remains locked until maturity, which is inconvenient if needed in the short term. The yield depends on the annual nominal rate (TNA) and the duration of the deposit. For example, with a TNA of 1.5%, a deposit of 10,000 dollars would generate approximately 150 dollars in a year. If the rate is 2%, the yield would be 200 dollars. In addition to the rate, one must consider the minimum term, the required amount, and the bank's conditions. It is crucial to know what happens at maturity, as some institutions allow you to choose what to do with the capital and interest. It is also important to verify that the product is a fixed-term deposit in dollars and to understand the contracting conditions. It is not advisable to place all dollars in a fixed-term deposit due to the lack of immediate availability. If the savings are an emergency fund, it is better to keep part liquid and only invest what will not be needed. Low profitability may make it not worthwhile to sacrifice availability.
