Decred Vulnerability Leads to Issuance of Approximately 2077.97 DCR, Decision Not to Roll Back
The Decred mainnet experienced an inflation vulnerability from August 16 to 17, resulting in the illegal generation of approximately 2077.97 DCR. This vulnerability has existed in the consensus code since the mainnet launched in February 2016, stemming from improper edge case handling during the interaction between the regular transaction tree and the staking transaction tree, which allowed for double-spending inputs. The vulnerability was reported on August 12 through a bounty program, but it had already been exploited before a fix could be implemented. The Decred team has decided not to roll back the changes to minimize the impact on users. The issuance of approximately 2000 DCR will not affect the hard cap of 21 million coins and is significantly lower than the historical subsidies that were under-issued due to reasons like missed votes (over 215,000 coins). The team has developed additional double-spending monitoring services and plans to improve the emergency upgrade signaling mechanism.
