Breakdown of Collaboration on Account Abstraction Standards Between Base and Ethereum L1

Ethlabs researcher Derek Chiang revealed that the collaboration on account abstraction standards between EIP-8130 (led by Base) and EIP-8141 (led by Ethereum L1) officially broke down last week, with Ethereum and Base each advancing their own account abstraction standards. There are fundamental differences in core objectives between L1 and L2: Ethereum L1 pursues censorship resistance, privacy protection, and quantum computing resistance, while L2s like Base prioritize high throughput, compliance, and customizability. Both parties attempted to find a common standard that accommodates both sides but failed to reach an agreement, and the burden of fragmentation will shift to wallet developers. Possible future directions include establishing a coordination mechanism that encompasses more stakeholders to jointly govern shared resources like the EVM, or accepting that fragmentation between L1 and L2 is inevitable and focusing on building wallets and applications that can abstract away the underlying differences.
