1500 Bid Farewell to Jeff Dean in the Last 48 Hours Before His Departure
Jeff Dean, former Chief Scientist at Google, revealed his schedule for the last two days before his departure at KDD 2026. On his last day, he said goodbye to 139 colleagues, and approximately 1500 people attended his farewell party, although the on-site café could only accommodate about 300 people. At 10:30 PM, he received 400 farewell messages in an internal chat and replied until 2:30 AM. The next morning, he received another 250 internal messages and 500 emails, finally closing his laptop at 5:20 PM. Dean's departure was announced a week prior; he was Google's 30th employee, having worked for nearly 27 years, ultimately serving as Chief Scientist. He co-founded Discovery Loop with Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le, focusing on enabling AI to autonomously propose, run, and evaluate experiments in machine learning, chips, drugs, and materials research. Alphabet remains the founding investor and cloud partner of the company.
